How to Make a Winter Activity Book for KDP (That Sells Past Christmas)
Make a winter activity book for Amazon KDP: which puzzles suit each age, winter themes that last from December to February, when to publish, answer pages, trim size and price.
By Dau Le · · 5 min read
A winter activity book has one big advantage over a Christmas book: it is still relevant after December 25. Snow days, January indoor afternoons, New Year's Eve and February half-term all fall inside it. This guide covers how to make a winter activity book for Amazon KDP: which puzzles to include for each age, themes that last the whole season, when to publish, answer pages, trim size and price.
In short: choose one age group, mix three or four puzzle types that suit it, use winter themes rather than Christmas ones so the book fits December to February, add answer pages, publish by early December, and check the page count against the printing cost before you set a price. You can see a full winter set on paper in our free winter printables.
What goes in a winter activity book?
An activity book is a mix of puzzle types around one theme. Mixing keeps a child (or an adult) turning pages, and it lets one book cover a wider age range than a single-puzzle book.

| Age | Puzzles that work | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4–7 | Dot-to-dot (20–40 dots), easy mazes, coloring | One activity per page, big lines |
| 6–10 | Mazes, word search (10 × 10 to 12 × 12), dot-to-dot (40–80 dots) | Shaped mazes look seasonal |
| 10+ and adults | Word search, cryptograms, mandala coloring, crosswords | Large print widens the audience |
Pick one row and say it on the cover. "Ages 4–8" and "for adults" are different books, with different keywords and different reviews.
Which winter themes last all season?
Use themes that are true from December to February:
- Snow day: sled, snowman, mittens, snow angel, cocoa.
- Winter animals: penguin, polar bear, seal, arctic fox, owl.
- Cozy at home: blanket, fireplace, soup, slippers, books.
- Winter sports: skiing, skating, hockey, curling, sledding.
- Winter weather: blizzard, frost, icicle, sleet, flurry.
- New Year: countdown, confetti, resolution, calendar.
Christmas themes sell well for six weeks and then stop. A winter book can carry one New Year section, but keep Santa, ornaments and nativity pages for a separate Christmas book.
Avoid characters and brands entirely — no snowmen or princesses from films, no team names for the hockey page. Use generic pictures and your own word lists.
Which puzzles suit older children and adults?

- Cryptograms with winter lines. Use public domain text — Shakespeare, Shelley, Christina Rossetti's "In the Bleak Midwinter", Robert Burns's "Auld Lang Syne" — or lines you wrote yourself. Modern song lyrics and recent quotes are not free to use.
- Mandala coloring pages in six-sided, snowflake-like frames or winter shapes, one design per page.
- Large print word searches for older solvers: 12 × 12 grids, big letters, 12 words a puzzle.
When should you publish a winter book?
Searches for winter activities rise through December and stay up in January. KDP says a new book can take up to 72 hours to review, and a new listing needs time to be found, so aim to publish by early December. A book that misses that date is still in season in January and February, which a Christmas book is not.
How do you add the answers?
Put the answers at the back, four puzzles to a page for word searches, mazes and cryptograms, and the finished picture for each dot-to-dot. Coloring pages need no answers. Label each answer with its puzzle number so a parent can find it in seconds.
What trim size, page count and price work for a winter activity book?
Children's activity books are almost always 8.5 × 11 in, one activity per page. Two example formats, priced with Amazon.com's 2026 printing costs (black ink):
| Book | Pages | Printing | Royalty at lower price | Royalty at $9.99 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 activities, 1 per page, answers 4 per page | about 76 | $2.84 | about $1.16 at $7.99 | about $3.15 |
| 90 activities, 1 per page, answers 4 per page | about 112 | about $2.90 | about $1.59 at $8.99 | about $3.09 |
Below $9.99, KDP pays 50% of the list price instead of 60% — see KDP paperback royalties and the 50% rule. These are per-copy royalties, not a sales forecast; check your own numbers in the royalty calculator, size the cover with the spine width calculator and compare sizes in trim size for puzzle books.
How do you publish it on KDP?
- Title and subtitle: say the season, the age and the puzzle types — for example "Winter Activity Book for Kids Ages 6–9: Mazes, Word Search, Dot-to-Dot and Coloring, with Answers".
- Low-content option or ISBN: activity books can be published as low-content, which makes the ISBN optional (but rules out Expanded Distribution).
- Upload the interior and cover PDFs and fix anything the previewer flags.
- Order a proof and try one page of each type with a pencil.
- Description: list the puzzle types, how many of each, the age range and that answers are included.

Frequently asked questions
What should a winter activity book include?
Three or four puzzle types that suit one age group — for example dot-to-dot, mazes and coloring for ages 4–7, or word search, cryptograms and mandala coloring for adults — around winter themes, with answer pages at the back.
When should I publish a winter book on KDP?
Aim for early December. Searches for winter activities rise through December and stay up in January, and a new listing needs time to be reviewed and found.
Is a winter book better than a Christmas book?
They sell at different times. A Christmas book is in season for about six weeks; a winter book with snow, animals, sports and New Year themes fits December through February.
Can I use winter poems in a cryptogram book?
Yes, if the text is in the public domain — for example Shakespeare, Shelley, Christina Rossetti or Robert Burns — or if you wrote it yourself. Modern lyrics and recent quotes are not free to use.
What trim size is best for a kids winter activity book?
8.5 × 11 in with one activity per page, so mazes and dot-to-dots are large enough for small hands.
