How to Make a Crossword Puzzle Book for KDP
Make a crossword puzzle book for Amazon KDP: clue, fill-in or newspaper-style grids, themes and clues, grid size, answer pages, trim size and price.

Crossword books are harder to make than word search books, and buyers can tell. A word search only needs a list of words; a crossword needs words that interlock, clues that are fair, and an answer page that matches every square. This guide covers how to make a crossword puzzle book for Amazon KDP: which kind of crossword to make, themes and clues, grid size, answer pages, trim size and price.
In short: choose one kind of crossword (clue, fill-in or newspaper-style) and one audience, write plain clues for words your readers know, use one puzzle per page on 8.5 × 11 in so there is room to write, put the answers at the back, and check the page count against the printing cost before you set a price. You can see each kind on paper with our free printable crossword puzzles.
What do you need to make a crossword puzzle book?
A crossword maker that lays out your words with as many crossings as possible, numbers the grid, prints the clues beside it and makes the answer pages; a cover sized to your page count; and a free KDP account. The DT Labs crossword maker does the layout in your browser and tells you when a word could not be placed, so nothing is dropped without your knowing.
Which kind of crossword should your book use?
There are three common kinds, and most books stick to one.

| Kind | What the solver sees | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Clue crossword (free-form) | A grid of themed words with numbered Across and Down clues | Children, families, classrooms, themed gift books |
| Fill-in | A grid and a list of words by length — no clues | All ages, solvers who like logic more than trivia |
| Newspaper style | A square grid with black squares in a symmetric pattern; every white square is in an Across and a Down word | Adults who know the daily-paper format |
Free-form clue crosswords are the easiest place to start: you choose a theme, list 10 to 15 words with a clue each, and the layout is built around them. Newspaper-style grids are filled from a large general word list, so they suit general books rather than tight themes. Every word in that fill needs a clue; in the DT Labs maker the clues print only when every word has one, and otherwise the page becomes a fill-in with the word list.
How do you choose themes and write clues?
A theme gives a book a title, a cover and a reason to buy: "Animal Crosswords for Kids", "Gardening Crossword Puzzles", "Christmas Crosswords for Families". Within a theme:
- Use words your reader knows. A child's book about animals should use ZEBRA and OTTER, not OKAPI.
- Write one clear clue per word. "Striped horse of the African plains" works; a pun that only you understand does not.
- Keep clue length even. One line per clue fits the page and reads well.
- Avoid trademarks. Brand names and character names do not belong in clues or answers.
The DT Labs maker comes with 18 themes — animals, ocean life, space, weather, fruits, farm, human body, kitchen, music, sports, travel, garden, birds, Christmas, Halloween, school, jobs and camping — each with words and clues, and you can use your own words and clues instead.
How many words per puzzle?
Ten to fifteen words is a comfortable size for a themed clue crossword on one page. More words make a bigger grid and a longer clue list; fewer can look sparse. If a word cannot be placed because it shares no letters with the others, swap it for one that does.
What grid size works on the page?
On an 8.5 × 11 in page with the clues below the grid, 13 × 13 is the classic free-form size. Use 11 × 11 for younger children or large print, and 15 × 15 or 17 × 17 for adults who want a long puzzle. Newspaper-style grids range from a 5 × 5 mini to 13 × 13.
For why one puzzle per page on large trim is usual for crosswords, see trim size for puzzle books: the grid and the clue list both need room, and solvers need space to write letters in the squares.
How do you add the answers?
Put the answer pages at the back: the filled grid for each puzzle, with the same number and title. Two to four answers per page works for most books.

Because the answers come from the same layout as the puzzle, they always match. Still, solve two or three puzzles yourself from the proof copy — that is how you catch a clue that is unclear.
What trim size, page count and price work for a crossword book?
Two example formats on 8.5 × 11 in, one puzzle per page, priced with Amazon.com's 2026 printing costs (black ink):
| Book | Pages | Printing | Royalty at lower price | Royalty at $9.99 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 crosswords, answers 4 per page | about 66 | $2.84 | about $1.16 at $7.99 | about $3.15 |
| 100 crosswords, answers 4 per page | about 128 | about $3.18 | about $1.32 at $8.99 | about $2.82 |
Below $9.99, KDP pays 50% of the list price instead of 60% — see KDP paperback royalties and the 50% rule. These are per-copy royalties, not a sales forecast; check your own numbers in the royalty calculator and size the cover with the spine width calculator.
How do you publish the crossword book on KDP?
- Title and subtitle: name the theme, the audience and the count — for example "Animal Crossword Puzzles for Kids Ages 8–12: 50 Themed Crosswords with Answers".
- Low-content option or ISBN: puzzle books can be published as low-content, which makes the ISBN optional (but rules out Expanded Distribution).
- Upload the interior and cover PDFs and fix anything the previewer flags.
- Order a proof and solve a few puzzles with a pencil.
- Description: state the theme, the kind of crossword, the number of puzzles, one per page and that answers are included.
Keyword research and cover design work the same way as for word search books — see how to make a word search book for KDP.
