How to Make a Math Workbook for KDP (Kindergarten to Grade 4)
Make a math workbook for Amazon KDP: which skills suit each grade, how many problems per page, answer keys, trim size, page count and price.
By Dau Le · · 6 min read
A math workbook looks simple: pages of sums with the answers at the back. The reviews tell a different story. Parents notice when a "Grade 1" book jumps to two-digit regrouping on page three, when the same fact repeats five times on a page, or when one answer in the key is wrong. This guide covers how to make a math workbook for Amazon KDP that a parent or teacher will trust: which skills suit each grade, how many problems per page, answer keys, trim size, page count and price.
In short: pick one grade and one skill (or a short run of skills), keep 20 to 30 problems on a facts page with no repeats, put a correct answer key behind every sheet, and check the page count against the printing cost before you set a price. You can see the levels on paper with our free printable math worksheets.
What do you need to make a math workbook?
A worksheet generator that makes problems from the rules of the skill — not a fixed list — and works out the answer key from the same numbers, a cover sized to your page count, and a free KDP account. The DT Labs math worksheet generator builds the interior in your browser: title page, worksheets and answer keys at KDP trim sizes, with no repeats on a page.
Which math skills suit each grade?
Match the book to one grade. A buyer searching "1st grade math workbook" wants the first-grade skills, in order, and nothing that belongs two years later.

| Grade | Skills that fit | Good settings |
|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten | Adding within 10, counting on | Sums to 10, one skill per page |
| Grade 1 | Addition and subtraction facts to 20, time to the hour and half hour | Sums to 20, no negative answers |
| Grade 2 | 2-digit addition and subtraction, time to the quarter hour or 5 minutes | With and without regrouping, mixed |
| Grade 3 | Multiplication and division facts, simple fractions, missing numbers | Tables 1–10 or 1–12, no remainders |
| Grade 4 | Multi-digit multiplication, long division, comparing large numbers | Remainders on, 3- and 4-digit numbers |
These are common US grade expectations; school programmes differ, so describe the skills in the listing, not only the grade.

One skill or a mix?
Both sell. A single-skill book ("Multiplication Facts 0–12: 100 Timed Tests") is easy to describe and easy to find. A grade-level book mixes skills in teaching order — for example addition facts, then subtraction, then time, then comparing numbers. If you mix, keep each skill in its own section and say the order in the description.
How many problems should go on a page?
20 to 30 problems a page is a common layout for facts practice: enough for practice, short enough to finish in a few minutes. Fewer, larger problems suit kindergarten. Clocks, fraction shapes and long division need room to draw or show work, so they go about 6 to 16 a page.
Two details make a page feel right:
- No repeats on a page. A page that asks 7 + 5 three times looks careless. Good generators draw each fact once per page.
- A name, date, score and time box at the top. Teachers and parents use them, and timed fact tests are a popular format.
How do you make the answer keys?
Every worksheet needs an answer key that matches it exactly, and the only safe way is to work out the key from the same numbers that made the sheet — never retype it.

Put the keys at the back, labelled with the worksheet number. One key per page is easiest for a parent to tear out and mark with; two or four to a page keeps the page count down. Before you publish, check a few keys from different sections by hand — it takes five minutes and prevents the review nobody wants.
What trim size, page count and price work for a math workbook?
Most math workbooks are 8.5 × 11 in: children write large, and teachers photocopy pages. Two example formats, priced with Amazon.com's 2026 printing costs (black ink):
| Book | Pages | Printing | Royalty at lower price | Royalty at $9.99 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 worksheets, answer keys 4 per page | about 66 | $2.84 | about $1.16 at $7.99 | about $3.15 |
| 100 worksheets, answer keys 4 per page | about 128 | about $3.18 | about $1.32 at $8.99 | about $2.82 |
Below $9.99, KDP pays 50% of the list price instead of 60% — see KDP paperback royalties and the 50% rule. These are per-copy royalties, not a sales forecast; check your own numbers in the royalty calculator.
Check margins in the trim size guide and size the cover with the spine width calculator once the page count is final.
How do you publish the math workbook on KDP?
- Title and subtitle: say the grade, the skill and the count — for example "Addition and Subtraction Facts Grade 1: 100 Practice Worksheets with Answer Keys".
- ISBN: a workbook with problems is usually published with KDP's free ISBN rather than with the low-content option.
- Categories and age range: set the grade and reading age in the KDP details so the book is shown to the right buyers.
- Upload the interior and cover PDFs and fix anything the previewer flags.
- Order a proof, solve one page from each section with a pencil and check it against the key.
- Description: list the skills in order, the number of worksheets, the problems per page and that answer keys are included.
The same pages also work as Etsy digital downloads, sold as a printable PDF instead of a paperback.
Try the levels on paper first
Our free printable math worksheets page has 35 worksheets in seven sets — addition and subtraction facts, 2-digit addition, multiplication and division facts, telling time and fractions — each with its answer key. Printing a set is the quickest way to judge the level for the grade you have in mind. For number puzzles rather than drills, there are also free printable Mathdoku puzzles.
When you are ready, the math worksheet generator makes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division facts, long division, missing numbers, telling time, fractions, comparing numbers and mixed operations, and exports a KDP-ready PDF with answer keys. It is free, and exports carry a commercial licence. If your next book is for younger children, see how to make a handwriting practice book for KDP.
