How to Make Bingo Cards: Words, Numbers or Pictures
Make printable bingo cards where every card is different: card size, how many words, 75-ball numbers, caller sheet and printing — plus free holiday sets.

To make bingo cards, choose a card size, write a list of calls with more words than the card has squares, put a different selection of those calls on every card, and keep a caller sheet with every call on it. The hard part by hand is making sure no two cards are the same; a bingo card generator does that check for you and lays the cards out ready to print.
In short: use 5 × 5 cards with a FREE centre for adults, 3 × 3 or 4 × 4 for young children, at least 35–40 words for a word set, one card per player, and a caller sheet to check winners. Ready-made free printable bingo cards for Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter and 1–75 numbers are a quick start.
What do you need to make bingo cards?
Four things: a list of calls (words, numbers or pictures), a card size, a way to make every card different, and a caller sheet. You can do it in a spreadsheet and a word processor, but laying out 30 cards by hand and checking each one against the others takes an evening. The DT Labs bingo card generator builds the whole set in your browser and exports a print-ready PDF.
| Step | By hand | With a generator |
|---|---|---|
| Write the call list | Same | Same — or use a built-in theme |
| Fill every card | Copy and shuffle per card | Automatic |
| Check no two cards match | Compare every pair | Checked as each card is made |
| Caller sheet | Type it up | Added at the front |
| Layout for printing | Resize tables | One, two or four cards per page |
What size should a bingo card be?
5 × 5 with a FREE centre square is the classic card and suits adults and older children. Smaller grids make shorter, easier games:

| Card | Squares to fill | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 3 × 3 | 8 + FREE | Toddlers and preschool, picture bingo |
| 4 × 4 | 16 (no centre) | Young children, short games, classroom vocabulary |
| 5 × 5 | 24 + FREE | Adults, parties, number bingo, care homes |
Even-sized grids (4 × 4) have no single centre square, so they are played without a FREE space.
How many words do you need for word bingo?
At least as many as there are squares — and ideally half as many again. A 5 × 5 card needs 24 different words. With exactly 24, every card holds the same words in a different order: everyone finishes a full-card game on the same call, and line games end in lots of ties. With 35–40 words, cards share some calls but not all, which gives a real winner in a reasonable time.
| Card | Minimum words | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| 3 × 3 | 8 | 15–20 |
| 4 × 4 | 16 | 25–30 |
| 5 × 5 | 24 | 35–45 |
Keep words short enough to fit a square — long phrases shrink to small print. Mix easy and slightly harder words so younger players are not left behind.
How does number bingo work?
Classic number bingo uses 75 balls and a 5 × 5 card. Each column draws its numbers from its own range:
- B: 1–15
- I: 16–30
- N: 31–45 (four numbers plus the FREE centre)
- G: 46–60
- O: 61–75
Keeping the columns fixed lets players find a called number quickly — "G 52" is always in the fourth column. The caller sheet for number bingo is simply 1 to 75, grouped by letter.
How do you make sure every bingo card is different?
Compare each new card with the ones already made, and throw it away if it has exactly the same set of calls as another card. By hand that means checking every pair: 30 cards is 435 comparisons. A generator does it automatically as it builds the set.
The DT Labs generator compares the set of calls on each card, not just the order, so two cards never hold the same words rearranged. If your word list is too short for the number of cards you asked for, it tells you how many different cards are possible instead of quietly repeating one.
What is a bingo caller sheet?
A caller sheet lists every call in the set with a box to tick. The caller reads calls in any order, ticks each one, and checks a winning card against the ticks before the next game.

If you prefer drawing calls from a bowl, print a second caller sheet and cut the calls apart.
How many bingo cards per page?
One card per page is easiest to read and is the right choice for large print. Two per page saves paper and gives half-letter cards that are still comfortable. Four per page gives small cards for classroom sets, where children sit close to the caller.

Long words shrink first, so if your list has words like NUTCRACKER or WRAPPING PAPER, prefer one or two cards per page.
How do you print bingo cards so they last?
- Card stock (65–110 lb) for cards you will use more than once.
- Sheet protectors or lamination plus dry-erase markers for classrooms and care homes.
- Markers such as coins, buttons or dried beans for paper cards you want to reuse.
- Print at actual size on US Letter, or choose Fit on A4.
Where can you get free printable bingo cards?
Our free printable bingo cards page has four ready-made sets — Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter and classic 1–75 numbers. Each set has 30 different 5 × 5 cards, one per page, plus a caller sheet, in a single PDF.

For a baby shower, a classroom topic or a birthday, make your own set from your word list with the bingo card generator.
Can you sell bingo cards you make?
Yes, if you made them yourself or your tool gives you a commercial licence for its output. Printable bingo sets sell as instant downloads on Etsy, and large print bingo books sell on Amazon KDP. A few rules keep a listing safe:
- No trademarks or characters — no film, TV, sports team or brand names in the words or the title.
- Say exactly what the buyer gets: how many cards, the card size, whether a caller sheet is included, and the paper size.
- Include both US Letter and A4 for buyers outside the US.
- For a KDP bingo book, use one card per page at 8.5 × 11 in and check the margins in the trim size guide.
Exports from the DT Labs bingo card generator include a commercial licence for Etsy and KDP. If large print books are your market, our guide to large print word searches for seniors covers letter sizes that also apply to bingo.
